FIFTY Weymouth and Dorchester-based Ukrainian refugee children were treated to a fun day out at an adventure centre.

They took part in a range of activities including bushcraft, archery, circus skills and aeroball at Cumulus Outdoors Adventure Centre in Swanage.

The day also provided an opportunity for Ukrainian families to interact socially as a group throughout the day.

To cover the costs, Reverend Nick Clarke and retired Weymouth teacher Andy Dukes did a sponsored cycle of 33 miles from St Aldhelm's Church in Weymouth to Cumulus Outdoors and greeted the Ukrainians as they arrived.

There were also donations from Weymouth Rotary Club and the ‘Weymouth for Ukraine’ group led by Gail Reynolds.

Members of St Aldhelm's Church generously donated and worked hard to prepare and provide a picnic lunch for the Ukrainians which was described as ‘yet another aspect of a perfect day.’

There was plenty of great feedback from the Ukrainian refugees who were a part of the experience.

One extremely grateful parent said: “Thank you! Thanks everyone who participated in the organization of our unforgettable journey. I looked at our children and thought that it was extraordinary.

“They are alive, they are happy, they are again under the clear sky getting fun and not in basements with armed missile attacks.

“They laughed and did not mention the war, they did mention Ukraine - Thanks to all who created our celebration.”

Another added: “Thank you for a wonderful trip and such a happy day. You are simply incredible people, I never cease to be amazed at your sincerity, kindness, dedication.”

Before returning home, Cumulus Outdoors presented all the Ukrainians with a high-quality sleeping bag and they were overjoyed and within minutes, many arrangements had been made for sleepovers between the children.

Another Ukrainian parent added: “What an amazing day! So much fun, games and laughter. The activities kept everyone smiling and I'm just so grateful for this wonderful day trip to all our Ukraine families. And a huge thank you for our leaving gifts of brand-new sleeping bags for everyone!”
