Serving military personnel and veterans attending Remembrance Sunday events will be able to travel for free on all South Western Railway services.

They will also be able to redeem free travel to the Submariners' Remembrance Service on Sunday, November 6 as well as the national commemoration at the Cenotaph on Sunday, November 13.

The free travel will additionally be able to travel on any London bound SWR service for free on the day before the service, returning from London on the Sunday.

This offer, which is funded by the Department for Transport, is available to anyone who is travelling in uniform or able to show an appropriate form of identification.

A spokesperson for SWR said: "This is our way of paying tribute to both current and previous generations of servicemen and women as many of our colleagues, including guards and drivers, are former members of the armed services.

"Our commitment to supporting Remembrance events demonstrates their significance for us."

Peter Williams, commercial director for South Western Railway, said: “South Western Railway is glad that we are once again able to offer free travel to service personnel and veterans to attend Remembrance Sunday events.

"By making it easier for people to attend these events, we can help to honour the sacrifice made by so many of our servicemen and women. This initiative is particularly important to us as many of our SWR colleagues come from a service background”.

Meanwhile Great Western Railway has underlined its commitment to the armed forces community by signing the Armed Forces Covenant.

The covenant is a promise by the nation that those who serve or have served in the Armed Forces, and their families, should be treated fairly when accessing services in the UK, and do not face discrimination compared to other citizens.

GWR business assurance director, Joe Graham said: "We’re especially proud to have now formally signed the Armed Forces Covenant.

“The armed forces are a really important part of the social fabric of the GWR network and this national scheme demonstrates our support for military personnel, their families, and veterans, recognising their fantastic contribution to the community.”
