A family-run Beaminster shop has made it on to a worldwide list which aims to showcase 'extraordinary retailers' across the globe.

Brassica Mercantile, based in The Square, was recognised alongside stores from as far as France, the USA and Canada in the 2022 Best Shops list, compiled by The Shopkeepers, a website celebrating 'unique and inspiring' independent businesses.

The Beaminster shop stocks food and drink including organic meat and poultry from local farms, charcuterie, books and homeware just a stone's throw from sister business Brassica Restaurant, which uses the ingredients it sells.

Owner Louise Chidgey has more than 20 years' experience in the retail sector and wanted to establish a brand 'which reflected a relaxed way of life'.

Brassica Mercantile also offers a delivery and collection service to customers, as well as gift cards.

It was honoured within the Best Food and Provisions Shops in the Best Shops guide, sitting in the same esteem as stores in New York and Vancouver.

The shop was just one of a handful from the UK which was honoured on the list, including firms from Somerset and London.

Brassica wrote on Facebook that it was 'incredibly happy' to be included on the global list.

"This year we received such an amazing response to our 2022 Best Shops campaign," The Shopkeepers said on its website.

"This year the list includes some newcomers and some oldies but goodies, from last year’s and previous year’s lists.

"Stores that delight with discovery and inspire browsing. Shops that we visit when we travel or local ones that we love to return to again and again.

"We discovered lots of lovely shops via your nominations. Unfortunately we can’t include every shop on our list – it would be way too long."

Other categories aimed to find the best bookshops, stationery and gift shops across the world.
