The Met Office has put in place a warning for snow and ice in Dorset from this evening as temperatures continue to plummet.

Snow has been falling across many parts of the country, including the south west, in recent days during the cold snap.

Weather officials have now warned Dorset residents of disruption due to snow and ice from 6pm this evening (Tuesday) until 10am tomorrow (Wednesday).

Delays are expected on public transport and on the roads during the cold weather, with the yellow warning covering the entirety of the county.

People are also being reminded to stay away from icy waters after emergency services attended reports of a child on an area of ice near Wareham this morning.

"Some roads and railways likely to be affected, leading to longer journey times by car, as well as bus and train services," The Met Office said.

"Snow and sleet falling on frozen surfaces may lead to icy conditions, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries

"The combination of wind and snow may cause some drifting and very poor visibilities, especially over hills and moors."

"Mostly light snow across the south west on Tuesday afternoon may become a little heavier and more widespread into Tuesday night, before clearing southwards on Wednesday

"Near some coasts sleet is more likely, especially at first, but this brings an ice risk."
