POLICE enquiries are ongoing after a car blocked a level cross at Brockenhurst this morning.

British Transport Police received a report of a car on the railway line at 6.48am.

Trains were cancelled as a result of the line being blocked.

The car was removed around half an hour later.

A British Transport Police spokesperson said: "We received a report of a car on the railway line in Brockenhurst at 6.48am today (24 January) and an update that the car was off the line at just before 7.20am.

"Enquiries into this incident are ongoing."

A Network Rail spokesperson said: "At 0647am we were alerted to reports of a small car that had driven on to the track via Brockenhurst Level Crossing.

"The car was off the track by 0715am and the lines have now reopened."

Delays of up to 40 minutes are being reported and disruption is expected until 12pm today.

South Western Railway services are affected between London Waterloo and Bournemouth, Poole and Weymouth along with Cross Country services between Manchester Piccadilly/Birmingham New Street and Bournemouth.

Posting on its website earlier, South Western Railway said: “We have been informed of a road vehicle blocking the railway at Brockenhurst level crossing.

“This means that all lines through the area are currently blocked.”

South Western Railway said the lines had reopened by around 7.45am.
