BARCLAYS bank in Weymouth will close for good in the town centre today.

The decision to close the bank, located in St Mary Street, was made in December 2022 and comes four years after the company opted to close its location in Bridport.

Barclays says it chose to shut the Weymouth branch because of fewer people using the branch regularly and a rise in online banking.

In a letter sent out to customers, Barclays wrote: "Many of our customers are choosing to bank differently these days, which means fewer customers are visiting our branches and because of this, we're going to be changing the way we support our customers in your area."

The closure means that local customers will have to make the journey to Dorchester to visit their nearest Dorset branch in person.

The bank said that it did not intend to make anyone redundant as a result of the closure.

Barclays did promise to 'still be part of the local community' despite the closure, with another resource set to open soon provide a service to help people with banking-related issues, but no cash would be held on the site.

The Weymouth branch is one of many that are set to close across Dorset this year as the banking world turns digital.
