A LOCAL bank service offering financial support and education for customers has opened in Weymouth.

Barclays Local opened for customers at the Weymouth Library and Learning Centre on Great George Street on Monday, March 6 - just days after its main branch on St Mary Street closed.

The main outlet closed on Friday, March 3 as Barclays said that 88 per cent of people who use the branch have also banked using the app, online and by phone in 2021, only 68 customers use the bank regularly as the only way to do their banking and that 23 per cent of the branch's customers have also used nearby branches over the previous 12 months.

Barclays told the Echo that it didn't intend to make anyone redundant as a direct result of the main branch closing.

The new local service will provide face-to-face support as well as offer financial support and education for customers although there will be no cash at the premises.

Everyday banking transactions will need to be completed at a local Post Office. The nearest Post Office outlet is located on St Thomas Street.

The bank has opened over 200 Barclays Locals around the country in community locations such as town halls and community centres, where customers can make appointments with colleagues or walk in.

A Barclays spokesperson said: "We’re pleased to open a Barclays Local here in Weymouth.

"This represents our commitment to customers who wish to continue to have an in-person banking presence by offering the ability to visit Barclays on their local high street, in a different environment."

Customers visiting the branch will be able to access a wide range of services including financial reviews, balance requests, open savings accounts and have support with digital banking.

The nearest cash Barclays bank is in Dorchester.
