MANAGER Bobby Wilkinson has reiterated his belief that Weymouth can stay up this season, despite a 5-2 thumping by Hungerford Town on Tuesday.

Weymouth were humbled by a side previously bottom of the table, the Crusaders leaping above the Terras following their five-star win.

While the mathematics show Weymouth remain five points adrift of safety, many fans feel relegation is a certainty after the defeat and booed the Terras off the pitch.

With ten games to go, Weymouth still have relegation-threatened Cheshunt, Chippenham, Hampton & Richmond and Taunton to play.

And the 30 points still on the table give Wilkinson, who is contracted to the end of 2025/26, cause for optimism.

He told Echosport: “What are we going to do, just give up? Do people want me to say it’s relegation?

“It’s ten games and there’s a lot of points still up for grabs. This group on their day can win three on the bounce.

“We’re just not consistent. Everyone’s entitled to their opinions but you’ll never hear (relegation talk) from me.

“If I said: ‘We’re down’ I’d get hammered for that. While there’s ten games, why would I think that?

“Will we stay up? I don’t know. When I came in with two points, people told me we were down but I gave us that belief.

“If we don’t stay up, we don’t stay up. The club, off the pitch, is trying to go in the right direction with a fantastic signing this week (Tom Bearwish).

“We’re tied in for the next two years and we’re all trying to build something because it hasn’t been working the last two years.”
