A local restaurant and charity have teamed up to raise money for earthquake survivors in Turkey and Syria.

Kurdish staff at the recently-opened Rona Grill on St Thomas Street in Weymouth have family in the devastated earthquake area between Turkey and Syria, and are keen to help in any way they can.

Members and friends of Portland and Weymouth Rotary clubs joined forces with the owners of the restaurant for a charity meal and fundraising night.

In total, more than £800 was raised from the event, which will be used to purchase six Water Survival Boxes.

The earthquake caused widespread damage to the freshwater supply. This contamination by sewage supply sees the rapid spread of diseases such as dysentery and typhoid.

These diseases can kill more people that the initial event itself. Two hundred water survival boxes have already been sent by Water Survival Box funded by Rotary clubs across the country.

Water Survival Box is a charity run by Chelwood Bridge Rotary Club.
