A popular family fish and chip shop that was closed by a fire almost a year ago will be re-opening in time for Easter.

Stracey's Fish and Chips in Preston, Weymouth has been closed since a fire broke out late into the night of April 22, 2022, after which it was announced it would be closed for the 'foreseeable future'.

The chippie, on 1 Church Rd next to The Spice Ship pub, has announced it will be re-opening on Friday, March 31, with all new staff, including a new manager.

Owner Glenn Stracey said: "After the fire, it was a really tough time, both mentally and physically, but what got us through was the support from customers and others in the industry, Craig from the Marlboro Restaurant and Mark Bennetts from Bennett's Fish and Chips. My thanks go out to them.

"We are looking forward to reopening to serve our loyal customers, we will be making it up to them with good fish and chips. We are a traditional family chippie and that's how I want it kept."

The fish and chip shop was closed for almost a year because of the damage done, and how long it took to get an insurance pay-out.

Mr Stracey said: "The insurance payout took a long time. I didn't get it until the season was well and truly over, if you saw the shop after the fire you would understand why."

Although the shop is re-opening for Easter, it will not yet be offering deliveries, which it does itself.

Instead, Mr Stracey indicated it is something he is looking to revive after the Easter holidays.

He said he would be focusing on getting the shop up and running in time for the Easter rush from the nearby holiday parks before expanding services when things quieten down.

There are also plans to introduce a 10 per cent discount for locals.

Mr Stracey adds: "It has been almost a year so we are looking forward to opening.

"Keep an eye on our Facebook for updates, we look forward to seeing you soon."
