A young saxophonist has proved himself to be a real chip off the old block.

Tom Waters, 22, the son of Dorset boogie woogie pianist Ben Waters - who has performed with the likes of Jools Holland - is to headline his very own gig at Dorchester Corn Exchange.

Growing up in Dorset, Tom had a far-from-conventional education. Touring with his mum, dad and sister from a very early age, he would accompany his parents on tours with Charlie Watts, Jools Holland, Ronnie Wood and other well-known blues and jazz musicians during school holidays.

The young Waters children would travel on the tour bus, go to the sound checks and soak up all the different sights and sounds, which profoundly affected them.

At age 5, Tom travelled to Edinburgh to see his dad play with Rocket 88. He heard Willie Garnett and Don Weller, two of the UK's finest sax players, play for the first time.

This initial spark made Tom fall in love with the music, and shortly after, he got his first sax and started sitting in on his dad's gigs.

Charlie Watts was so impressed he used to let young Tom do a few tunes with the Rolling Stones despite his tender age and after inviting Waters Sr and Jr to Hyde Park to see the band, he organised Tom a saxophone lesson with Bobby Keys and Tim Ries. Right at the end of the lesson, they presented Tom with a brand new sax to help him on his way to being a professional musician.

This incredibly kind act spurred former Broadmayne and Puddletown school pupil Tom onto another level.

At 16 he was offered a place at the prestigious Purcell Schools Of Music in London. It was here he would meet his good friend Jack Thomas who now plays the drums in the Electric People.

Later they would go to The Royal Academy Of Music Together and develop their music further. This special bond comes across in the music.

Living in London during university led Tom to play virtually every night, a regular at Ronnie Scotts, The 606 and countless other clubs.

He is also a virtuoso of the guitar and his impressive CV includes recording with The Rolling Stones and Sir Ray Davies, playing in The Jools Holland Rhythm and Blues Orchestra and playing hundreds of sell-out shows worldwide.

Tom's homecoming show on April 28 will celebrate the music he loves, blues, rock, jazz and electric.

He has asked local friends the George Hall Trio to play, who will be special guests for the night and will open the show.

Doors open for the 8pm gig at 7.30pm. Tickets cost £22 and can be bought from the website www.tomwaters.co.uk/live-dates//14/corn-exchange-dorchester
