Weymouth College learners have been showing off the fruits of their labours after signing up to the government’s new Multiply maths courses.

The £560m programme aims to transform the lives of hundreds of thousands of adults by improving their numeracy skills in daily life, home and work.

Research suggests that up to a quarter of the working age population in Dorset doesn't have qualifications at GCSE level.

Multiply courses are often free to anyone aged 19+ without maths GCSE at grade C (or equivalent) and offer daytime or evening, online or class-based courses and the option to gain qualifications.

Josh, 33, from Weymouth said: “After working in retail management and recently being made redundant, I decided to retrain as a nurse. But to be able to progress I really needed to refresh and improve my maths, English and IT - and Multiply has been perfect for that.

“I did the Pre-Functional Skills Course first to boost my confidence and am now working towards passing my Level 2 maths in July.

“I have already secured a place on a training course to be a healthcare support worker. And I’m now looking at a real future in nursing which has been possible thanks to Liz and my other tutors at Weymouth College.”
