Weymouth's Closet nightclub has asked for an extra hour in its bar area, until 4am, over the Easter bank holiday weekend.

The club’s Jamie Craig told councillors that he would not anticipate any additional public nuisance after recently spending around £10,000 on improving sound-proofing at the Maiden Street premises.

He said that, so far, residents in the area had been complimentary about the extra measures, which included doubling the number of doors to help stop sound ‘leaking’ from the building.

Dorset Council environmental protection staff told a licensing meeting, considering the extra hour for Friday April 8, Saturday 9th and Sunday 10th, that conditions at the premises had improved after a review which included a new noise management plan being brought into play.

The building is run as two businesses, with a nightclub area which has a licence until 5am, and the adjoining bar which is restricted to 3am with a ‘soft close’ starting at 2am.

Mr Craig said that the extra hour, to bring the bar closer in line with the club, would help disperse people at the end of the evening, as the business had done, successfully, on previous Easter weekends.

He told the panel of three Dorset councillors considering the temporary event notice for the additional hour that he also employed a ‘Road Marshall’ to keep an eye on the outside smoking area and encourage clients to limit the amount of noise they were generating.
