The local skating community has come out in force to ‘tear it up’ for a skatepark's one year anniversary.

The Marsh Skatepark Jam in Weymouth was organised by the builders of the park, Maverick, and took place on Saturday.

The day featured rider demos from pros, music from a family-friendly playlist, and competitions across each riding discipline.

Town councillors joined pros - including Team GB Olympic skater Alex DeCunha - and representatives from Maverick to soak up the sun and watch local skaters show off their best moves.

Danielle Roebuck, from Weymouth, attended with family and friends.

She said: “It is really good. My young kids are just starting out their skatepark careers, so we came down to have a look.

"We will definitely use it from now on.”

Jill Hooper, from Dorchester, came down to check out the skatepark with her two kids.

She said: “It’s a great skatepark, it’s good teens have something to do rather than hang around and it seems well used.

"It is lovely for the girls to have their own little section to show their skills."

Cllr Ryan Hope often visits the park with his young son who joined him at the Jam, and he said: “You can see how positively it’s been received by the local community.

“Not just kids, people of all ages use this. You can see people here from 7am in the morning until it gets dark.

“It was in the pipeline for 12 years, so to see kids using it is really great.”

Weymouth Town Council invested £358,000 in the facility, which opened in Westham last April and has since proved to be a popular place for younger residents to go to enjoy skating and scooting.

Russ Holbert, director from Maverick said: “It is amazing to see, there has been a great turnout.

“Some of these skateboarding kids are fearless, pushing the boundaries as far as experience goes. You can’t not have fun.

Scott Hamlin, a professional BMXer brought in as part of the ‘pro show’, said: “The energy here is fantastic, one of full support.

“The skatepark here has good facilities, all the key ingredients needed for a good skatepark.”
