HUNDREDS of cyclists came out in force to take on a stunning ride to the Dorset coast in aid of the county's air ambulance.

The Coast to Coast Cycle Challenge started on Sunday, April 23 at Watchet Harbour in Somerset before finishing at West Bay.

The 55-mile route raised cash for the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance (DSAA) charity and also included a shorter 11-mile route from Drimpton to West Bay.

Taking part in the event were former patients who had experienced the work of the air ambulance first-hand, while others cycled in memory of loved ones.

Watchet town crier David Milton rang his bell to signal the start of the ride, with roads lined with supporters as cyclists rode by.

DSAA says that the ride has raised in excess of £45,000 for the charity so far.

There were three pit-stops along the route at Ilminster, Bishops Lydeard and Drimpton, and the finish line was described as a 'buzz of atmosphere', with music, steam trains and refreshments on offer.

Although the event was not a race, the first male to cross the finish line was Freddie Mackay and the first female was Rachel Collin.

At 80 years young, Ed Highnam, a long-serving volunteer of the charity from Sturminster Newton, was the oldest participant who completed the challenging 55-mile route, whilst Adam Tye, aged 15, from North Petherton, was the youngest.

The youngest child to start the 11-mile route from Drimpton was 10-year-old Isabel Swancutt from Bridport; she was also the first to finish.

Emma Jones, Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance fundraising manager, said: “What a beautiful day we all had.

"Everyone who took part this year should be so very proud. Not only for their achievements of completing the challenge, but for raising funds to support our lifesaving work.

"So far, this year’s event has raised over £45,000, which is simply incredible.

"A huge thank you to everyone who helped to organise the event, including our incredible volunteers and wonderful sponsors."

The air ambulance's next cycling fundraiser takes place at its Henstridge airbase in Somerset on Saturday, June 10, called Race From The Base.
