A kayak holding six people capsized off the Dorset coast, leaving one person injured.

The group got into trouble at Dancing Ledge, near Swanage, when they ended up in the water.

One suffered a suspected dislocated shoulder in trying to recover from the capsize.

Swanage Lifeboat crews launched both of their lifeboats to help the injured kayaker shortly before 3.20pm on Monday, May 1.

They were said to be in 'a lot of pain' and treated by crews before being lifted out of the kayak and on to the lifeboat.

The casualty was eventually handed over to the care of the ambulance service at the entrance to Poole Harbour.

"Both lifeboats were requested to launch this afternoon following a report of a kayaker in difficulties in the Dancing Ledge area," Swanage Lifeboat Station said.

"The kayaker was part of a group of six but had suffered what was thought to be a dislocated shoulder after recovering from a capsize.

"The lifeboats launched and were soon on scene with the group of kayakers.

"The injured kayaker was in a lot of pain so Entonox was administered before they were carefully lifted out of their kayak and on to the all weather lifeboat.

"Once on the lifeboat the casualty was given a full asessment and their kayak was lifted aboard.

"The rest of the kayakers were all fine so they were left to return to Swanage under their own power.

"The coastguard were updated, an ambulance requested and the lifeboats returned to Swanage.

"The nearest ambulance was just becoming available in Poole so best speed was made to the landing stage at the entrance to Poole Harbour where the casualty was handed in to the care of ambulance medics."
