A 'valuable' Dorset bus service has returned for the summer to coincide with a BBC nature show being filmed nearby.

The 2RN service, which connects Wareham with the RSPB Nature Reserve at Arne, has made a welcome comeback.

It follows a successful trial last year and is 'perfectly timed' to match up with filming for the BBC's Springwatch feature from the reserve later this month.

As reported, RSPB Arne in Purbeck will take centre stage on the show which airs on BBC Two for three weeks between May 29 and June 15.

Arne is a landscape which consists of dramatic open heathland and ancient oak woodland and remains one of the few places in the UK where all six native reptiles can be found.

Rachel Martin, project officer at the RSPB, said: "RSPB Arne is a beautiful spot in the heart of the Purbeck Heaths National Nature Reserve.

"The 2RN bus provides a valuable service for those who don’t drive or have access to a car to get to us.

"With the rail links and campsite connections it is a convenient and cost-effective alternative for locals and tourists to choose to travel car-free. And if you have a bus pass, it’s free.

"Why not enjoy the journey, reduce congestion and choose a more sustainable way to travel within this wildlife rich area".

The service will run for four months from now through to the end of August and operate on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Sundays, up to four times a day.

In addition to serving Wareham railway station, it will also provide a connection between Arne and the Swanage Railway Park and Ride.

The minibus service, which is also fully accessible for people with mobility difficulties, is delivered by Dorset Community Transport as part of the RSPB Hyde’s Heath project supported by The National Lottery Heritage Fund.

Tim Christian, general manager at Dorset Community Transport, added: "We’re delighted that the 2RN has returned to RSPB Arne for the summer.

“We think that the 2RN will greatly benefit visitors to this popular tourist area and we’ve made sure that each service is timed to make good connections with trains at Wareham.”
