POLICE fear a group of youths may be responsible for killing more than 20 ducks along a picturesque riverside walkway.

The dead birds were discovered along the banks of the River Frome in Dorchester.

The youths have previously been spotted targeting other birds with catapults.

A spokesman said: "The Dorchester Neighbourhood Policing Team have previously had reports of seagulls being catapulted and injured by a group of youths.

"Over the last few days, more worryingly, we have had reports of 20 plus dead ducks being found along the riverwalks, Dorchester.

"If you see any such behaviour then please phone in immediately with any descriptions, direction of travel and any names known. Neighbourhood Policing Team will continue to patrol the area."

We previously reported on a shocking incident group which led to the deaths of a dozen seagulls in Weymouth.

School pupils were reported to have been enticing the gulls on to the busy road by throwing bread into fast-moving traffic.

Seven of the gulls were killed instantly after being run over and another five were taken to a nearby vets where they had to be euthanised.

All wild birds including seagulls are protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and it is illegal to intentionally take, injure or kill wild birds or interfere with their nest or eggs unless you are acting under license.

A spokesman from the RSPCA said: "This is an unacceptable way to behave towards any animal and we'd encourage people to show care and kindness towards wildlife.
