THIS old picture of Weymouth beach with a helter skelter on it gives a fascinating glimpse of the golden sands in bygone days.

You can see beachgoers enjoying the resort's amusements including a fairground ride on the beach and donkey rides.

Youngsters, many of them wearing summer hats, are enjoying the pleasures of playing on the beach.

Meanwhile people stroll along the promenade while some enjoy the view from benches overlooking Weymouth Bay.

The picture also shows the premises of auctioneer and estate agent J.C. Talbot and it looks as though the helter skelter was known as 'The Blip'.

But what most catches the eye is the level of the sand on the beach in this picture.

Compared to the sand level of Weymouth beach today, it is much lower, as this picture shows.

Reader Brian Lucas said: "What a great picture. How low the sand was back then."

Another reader said: "I wish they would let the sand go back that low again and the sea wall would probably do its job properly."
