Two cruise ships have arrived at Portland carrying 4,000 passengers between them.

The Celebrity Apex is a 2,910-passenger cruise ship and is the property of the American liner Celebrity Cruises, which comes under the Royal Caribbean Cruises group.

It is on a one-way 12-day trip from Amsterdam to Rotterdam. It departed from Amsterdam on Saturday and Portland was its first stop. It will depart for Cobh, Ireland at 4pm.

The Celebrity Apex is equipped with a distinctive ‘Magic Carpet,’ an orange cantilevered platform suspended along the starboard side of the ship that can move vertically between the top and bottom decks, designed to facilitate a more seamless tender service.

The ship is designed to have a ‘parabolic ultrabow’, where the bow rises vertically towards the decks to provide additional sheathing for its bow and house propellers to reduce drag and increase fuel efficiency.

The other cruise ship visiting Portland today is the Oceania Marina, carrying around 1,250 passengers.

The Oceania Marina is on a 56-day one-way trip from Southampton to Portsmouth. Portland is its last stop before arriving in Portsmouth. It will depart at 10pm.
