Parents and carers are being urged to apply for next year’s school admissions by the end of October to avoid missing out on their preferred choice of school.

Dorset Council has said that any child moving from primary to secondary school or middle to upper school should apply by Tuesday, October 31, 2023, for children starting school in September 2024.

For those who apply on time, they will find out the outcome of their application on March 1.

Parents who apply between November 1 and February 29 will find out on April 2, whilst any applications received after February 29 will not find out until at least June.

Cllr Byron Quayle, Dorset Council Portfolio Holder for Children, Education and Early Help said: “Parents or carers should complete their child’s application as soon as possible to give themselves the best chance of being offered a place at one of their preferred schools.

"Please don’t risk disappointment by leaving it too late.

“If an application is not made on time, families may find it harder to get their child into their preferred school.”

“I’d like to wish you all the best for this next exciting, albeit nerve-wracking, chapter.”

All applicants must be Dorset residents and are advised to read the parent’s guide on the Dorset Council website.

Parents who are unable to apply online are able to download a paper copy and must post the document by the deadline.

For children with special education needs and disabilities there is a different application process through the Education and Early Help (SEND) Team.
