WILKO closed its doors for the last time in Weymouth today, signalling a big loss for the town centre.

Shelves in the homewares store have been almost stripped bare as the popular retailer prepared to depart the high street for good.

It was an emotional day for staff, who told shoppers in a message 'not to be sad'.

The retail giant will have closed all of its stores nationwide by Sunday, October 8.

Around 400 stores will be taken over by Poundland or B&M but Weymouth's Wilko is not among them.

Wilko first opened its doors on Westham Road in 1999.

Since the announcement of the closure, Wilko has been picked clean by shoppers after discounts of up to 70 per cent were placed on many of the products in the store.

A sign outside the shop displayed messages from staff and one wrote: "Don't be sad because we are leaving, be happy we were here."
