A charity helping elderly people has held a Christmas celebration to bring festive cheer to those isolated during the festive period.

Age UK North, South and West Dorset held two free festive events to bring local people together.

More than 100 older people were nominated and invited to join the free Christmas dinner event, held at the Trumpet Major in Dorchester, with the pub putting on a two-course dinner.

Sponsored by local business, The Watercress Company, the events were spread out over two days, offering a community Christmas meal, followed by a carol concert.

Those most isolated or those unable to get there were offered transport with the Dorchester Disabled Club providing transport in the local area, and volunteer drivers transporting those living further afield.

The carol concert saw performances from Nina Garcia, the children of Damers First School and the charity's very own ‘melodies for memories’.

Attendees enjoyed a sing-along to some classic carols, and some festive pop favourites, hot drinks and mince pies.

Terri Lewis, Chief Executive Officer said: “Events like these are so much more than just another event, it can be a lifeline for many in our community who might otherwise feel isolated during the festive period.

"Thanks to the Watercress Company for sponsoring two free community events in as many days. As a local, independent charity, we rely on the goodwill of others to continue our vital support in the area, so we are truly grateful.”

As well as support from local businesses, the events were supported by many Age UK North, South and West Dorset volunteers, giving up their time to transport people from further afield, bringing those from Blandford, Wareham and Weymouth.
