Fancy dress and new year celebrations in Weymouth are synonymous with each other.

The long tradition of dressing up sees pirates, cowboys and all the latest pop culture trends descend on the town for the night, with those without a costume feeling like the odd one out.

This year, you are likely to see a wide variety of costume characters on New Year’s Eve in the seaside town, but who will you see the most?

Spa Road’s Premier Party Shop owner, Phil Anderson, has been busy in the run up to December 31 and gave us the low down of what to expect this year.

Dorset Echo: He said: “A lot of it’s been Willy Wonka stuff, because of the Wonka film. A lot of Oompa Loompas and face paint as well as Wonka hats.”

The Wonka film hit cinemas earlier this month and has drawn hundreds of locals to the cinema after star Timothée Chalamet was spotted filming scenes for the movie in Lyme Regis.

Dorset Echo: Mr Anderson went on to reveal that the films popularity has meant that he’s left with just one Wonka hat in stock.

Whilst Wonka may take top spot for many, Mr Anderson said there have been other trending outfits sold in the run up towards the new year.

He said: “Where’s Wally hats have been flying out so that’s a favourite one for people as well as rock and roll and hippy stuff- the John Lennon glasses have done well.

“All the 80s stuff has been very popular; people have been phoning me all day for 80s bits and bobs.

“This year I’ve been doing a lot of sparklers too. I do sell them every year but there has been a lot of sparklers so far this year.”

Mr Anderson added that foot fall to the shop has risen as people can’t rely on the delivery times. He also said that he will be renovating his website in the new year to offer even more party accessories.

Over to the Esplanade, Dolly Fitton of Weymouth Gifts and Fancy Dress said that Wonka had also been the firm favourite among customers in recent weeks.

Dorset Echo: She said: “The main film has been Wonka this year- a lot of people have been coming in and saying that’s what they want to be.

Dorset Echo: “Gangster costumes have been popular, and cowboys as always. We’ve mainly seen the older generations buying costumes whilst the youngsters have just started coming in and looking or buying accessories.

She went on to say that she expected to see more Barbies and Oppenheimers after the success of the films this year, but added that more people will come in for their last minute costume designs right up to New Year’s Eve.

So, it looks as though Weymouth will be Wonka full on New Year’s Eve, but what are you dressing up as?
