SIGNS to a former Weymouth attraction remain in place despite it closing more than four years ago.

The 53-metre Jurassic Skyline tower with its glass viewing gondola used to be a popular attraction on the Peninsula behind the Pavilion, offering views of Weymouth and Portland and beyond.

It was operated by Merlin Entertainments which own the Sea Life Centres among other attractions.

The tower was eventually taken down in 2019 after it saw a drop in visitor numbers.

Dorset Council has said that it is the responsibility of the now-defunct attraction to arrange to have the signs removed.

Merlin Entertainments has said they will look to remove the signs as a "matter of urgency".

The tower, known as the Jurassic Skyline and previously the Sea Life Tower, opened as a temporary attraction ahead of the Olympics in 2012.

It used to open all-year round until 2016, when it began closing for the winter months, reopening for the season in April.

In 2017, 14 people became trapped in the tower and had to be winched to safety by the coastguard helicopter.

Following investigations, safety procedures were revised and it reopened to the public.

Dorset Echo: In December 2017, the then Weymouth and Portland Borough Council’s planning committee voted unanimously to extend the licence for the Jurassic Skyline by five years, until November 2022.

However, this licence was cut short by its closure in 2019.

After it was removed, the tower was sold to another operator and it's understood it was sent to a site overseas.

After the closure, signs for the tower remain in place on Weymouth Peninsula, next to the Pavilion and there's a brown tourist sign for the Jurassic Skyline on the A354 Weymouth Relief Road.

Dorset Council said it would not remove the signs unless it was arranged by the attraction operators - Merlin Entertainments - or if they were already replacing other signs.

The signs remain the responsibility of Merlin.

A spokesperson for Merlin Entertainments said: "We’ve spoken with the team in Weymouth to discuss the signs and have been advised that whilst we are unable to remove the signs ourselves, a member of our team in Weymouth will contact the council to discuss their removal as a matter of urgency."
