A POLICE investigation was continuing today after a man was stabbed in Weymouth.

The attack at the weekend sparked a major inquiry from detectives and led to a small town centre street being cordoned off for much of Saturday morning.

People in the area reacted to the news of the shocking incident and seeing multiple police officers and forensics teams in the area.

The force was alerted after reports a man had been found injured at an address around 6.10am on Saturday. It followed what police described as ‘an altercation’ in Caroline Place.

A man in his 30s was taken to hospital for treatment to suspected stab wounds. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

The cordon was lifted about midday.

Residents and businesses say they are used to seeing police in the area.

Alison Scriven, owner of Thyme Out café in Great George Street, said on Saturday morning: “Police and forensics have been here since we arrived around 7am. No-one knows what exactly is going on. I wasn’t really surprised to see it.”

Nearby, Ellis Cox, manager of Vape d’Ami, said: “I’m not surprised in the slightest (seeing police and the cordon in place). We are used to it in Great George Street, it is not a great street to be on. It is unsettling.”

Local resident Mick Ellis said: “I saw it at about 9am whilst delivering newspapers. There seemed to be a bit of police activity on Chapelhay Steps as well but I don’t know if that’s linked to this incident.

"All I could see from Great George Street was a police officer and Caroline Place sealed off with red/white tape at both ends. I didn’t approach the police officer who was stood there but I did ask a couple of people who had asked him what was happening but they said he would not tell them.”

A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “We received a report at 6.10 am on Saturday, January 27, that a man had been found with injuries at an address in Weymouth town centre following an altercation that is believed to have occurred in Caroline Place.

"Officers attended and a man aged in his 30s was taken to hospital for treatment to suspected stab wounds that are not believed to be life-threatening.

“A full investigation into the incident is being carried out by detectives from Dorset County CID and cordons have been put in place as enquiries are carried out. There will be an increased policing presence in the vicinity and officers can be approached by members of the public with any information or concerns.”
