Police launched a search after someone allegedly made threats to kill store staff after being confronted for shoplifting.
Officers were assisted by CCTV operators in their search in Weymouth town centre following the incident at the B&Q DIY store at Jubilee Retail Park on Monday.
It is understood arrests were made in Westham Road.
A spokesperson for Dorset Police said: “Officers were called to B&Q, Jubilee Retail Park, Weymouth following reports that a male had threatened staff after being confronted for shoplifting.
“(Two males) quickly left the area but with assistance from our astute CCTV operators the pair were followed into town."
Police said a man reportedly found in possession of stolen items from other shops and items used for 'going equipped to steal' was arrested for theft, going equipped, common assault and making threats to kill towards the staff at B&Q.
He has subsequently been bailed whilst officers complete a couple of further enquiries into the offences.
A second man wanted on recall to prison was also arrested.
The police spokesperson added: "Apologies to any motorists on Westham Road at the time who may have been temporarily inconvenienced by police cars parked and blocking the road whilst officers were dealing with the two males.”
