A flood alert has been issued for Weymouth rivers and streams as heavy rainfall is forecast for Dorset.

The overnight rain is set to cause river levels to rise again today, Thursday, with flooding expected to affect locations near the River Wey, Preston Brook, and the River Jordan.

Low-lying land is expected to be most affected in these areas particularly around the River Wey to Radipole Lake.

A spokesperson for the Environment Agency said: "Flooding is possible at the River Wey to Radipole Lake, Preston Brook and River Jordan from 7.00am.

"Further heavy rainfall is forecast tomorrow evening. River levels will rise steadily, but the risk of flooding to low-lying land remains.

"We are clearing debris from weed screens in the area. We will continue to monitor the forecast and re-issue this alert/warning if necessary.

"Avoid using low lying footpaths and any bridges near local watercourses and do not attempt to walk or drive through flood water.

"Plan driving routes to avoid low lying roads near rivers, which may be flooded."

This news comes after the Met Office issued a yellow weather warning for rain to start from 2am on Thursday morning that will last until 6am on Friday, February 9.

People are being advised to prepare for flooding by ensuring they have an emergency flood kit and to check road conditions and bus and train timetables ahead of travelling.
