PLANS to turn a former Weymouth nightclub into six flats have been criticised for 'overdensity' and a lack of space for waste storage.

Chic Bar and Club on Maiden Street in Weymouth closed its doors for the final time on Saturday, March 30.

The venue has operated as a nightclub in the town for 60 years, but new plans could see the venue become six flats.

Chic has previously been known as Actors, Harry's and The Steering Wheel.

The plans would see the bar be turned into six small flats.

The existing sash windows will be refurbished and re-glazed to their original condition.

Developers say reopening some of the blocked windows and doors on the New Street elevation will also improve the current dilapidated appearance.

In a meeting Weymouth town councillors raised concerns that the six flats had no space for storage of litter and bikes.

Cllr Luke Wakeling said: "The flats are all quite small, I like density but these are quite dense.

"My concerns are a lack of bin storage and bike storage, somewhere to securely keep a bike in the absence of parking.

"I suggest they take one of the flats out and made one of the ground floor flats into a yard or garage for litter storage.

"If I was a young person working, I may consider living somewhere compact like this but we don't want families living in something this small.

"Bin collections are now fortnightly, who wants to keep litter in their kitchen for two weeks?"

Cllr Tim Young added: "In my youth, I have lived in places this small but I have always had somewhere to keep my bike. That is quite a severe limitation."

The committee attached a comment on the proposal which said: "We are going to object on the grounds of over-density and small sizes, we object that there is no ground floor storage for rubbish bins or bicycles, we would support it if there were five units with shared secure ground floor storage."

The comment will now go to Dorset Council, which has the final decision on the planning application.

The club announced it was closing its doors for the last time on Sunday, March 31.

In an announcement on the venue's Facebook page, a spokesperson wrote: "The end of an era.

"This Sunday, March 31 will be our final night before we close the doors to Chic, Aka Actors, AKA Harry’s, AKA The Steering Wheel.

"People have danced in our walls for 40 years. Sunday we will have one last celebration and think of the good times that were had. If walls could talk."
