The team at the Veterans Hub in Weymouth are ‘extremely humbled’ by the response of the local community following the revelation that they could have to close their doors for good.

As reported in the Echo, the ‘lifeline service’ on Portland Road, Wyke Regis was ‘living month to month’ and was at risk of closing ‘any week.’

Many of the service users spoke out about how if it wasn't for the hub, they 'would be six feet under,' or 'sat at home with the curtains closed, the door locked, the TV off, just sat there with their demons.'

However, the future is looking for a lot brighter for the hub.

Dorset Echo: The Veterans Hub

Andy Price, founder of the Veterans Hub said: “Although we are not 100 per cent out of muddy waters just yet, the fact is that for the first time in a long time the team has some breathing space and the future looks good, which is only because of the incredible generosity shown by the residents of Weymouth and Portland.”

Mr Price who oversees the project on a day-to-day basis alongside manager and company secretary, Rachel Gray, explained that ‘the entire team has been humbled by the way in which the community has rallied around them and that it has been incredibly emotional at times.’

He added: “The reality is that the hub has survived to fight another day and the team at the hub cannot thank this community enough for their support and love, which has enabled them to keep on helping those that need support, when they need it.

“We always have and always will rely heavily on goodwill, fundraising, and charitable donations to stay open.”

Plenty of fundraising efforts have been underway to save the hub.

Jason Vallance, who often spends time at the hub ran the Portland Marathon, raising nearly £600 for the service.

The Wyke Smugglers have also been donating the proceeds of their weekly meat draw every other week to the Veterans Hub.

Recently, the Veterans Hub hosted a charity ball which was supported by a number of celebrities who donated signed items for auction.
