THREE paddle-boarders were reportedly in difficulty in Weymouth Bay.

Coastguards from Wyke and the Weymouth Lifeboat crew were called to a paddle-boarder in difficulty in Weymouth Bay at around 4.15pm on Sunday, April 7.

The Weymouth Inshore Lifeboat (ILB) crew located the paddleboarder safe and well but were immediately called to two other paddleboarders in difficulty near Overcombe.

Both the Inshore lifeboat and the All-Weather Lifeboat (ALB) were tasked with locating the two paddle-boarders.

Local watersport enthusiasts confirmed to the crews that the paddle-boarders had safely made it back to shore.
A spokesperson for Weymouth Lifeboat said: "The initial notification was of a paddle-boarder in difficulty in Weymouth Bay, fortunately, they were quickly located safe and well.

"This was immediately followed by information that two paddle boarders might also be in difficulty. They were on a downwind passage from Portland Harbour to Overcombe.

"Wyke coastguard relocated to Overcombe & Bowleaze which would be the likely location they would end up if coming ashore.

"Both lifeboats were tasked to conduct a search plan in the bay.

"After asking local watersport enthusiasts of any matching descriptions at Overcombe and Bowleaze the individuals in question were confirmed to have made it ashore safely and all was well."

A spokesperson for Wyke Coastguard confirmed the paddle-boarders had made it ashore safely.

The incident was reported as a False Alarm with Good Intent (FAWGI).

The Weymouth Lifeboat team issued advice for paddle-boarders and other people in the sea off Weymouth and Portland.

A spokesperson for Weymouth Lifeboat said: "We strongly recommend that when going out on the water:

"Ensure that someone ashore knows what your plans are, where you are supposed to be and what time you expect to return.

"Carry a mobile phone in a waterproof pouch.

"Ensure you are wearing suitable clothing and buoyancy aid.

"Sail within your capabilities, and be sure you understand the prevailing weather and tides.

"But most of all enjoy your time on the water."
