The possible introduction of an e-bike rental scheme to a Dorset town has been welcomed.

According to a spokesperson, Dorset Council is considering the 'potential introduction' of a scheme to the Dorchester area.

The rental scheme would see people be given access to a motorized bicycle with an integrated electric motor used to assist propulsion.

If introduced, people would have the option of the transport around the town for a certain amount of time depending on the price paid. Wareham has introduced a similar scheme.

It is noted that the addition of e-scooter schemes are not being considered by the council at this time.

Councillor Richard Biggs brought up the possibility of introducing a scheme in the area at the Poundbury resident association’s annual general meeting last month, which was met by support from residents.

He said: “The council is looking into introducing an e-bike scheme which could possibly see locations in Poundbury.”

At this time, the bay locations for bikes are unknown, but Mayor of Dorchester, Cllr Alistair Chisholm, hopes it could link the town centre to Poundbury, as well as other tourist attractions in the county town.

He said: “It was brought up at a recent council meeting and I think it is an absolutely brilliant idea.

“It’s green, it’s sustainable and opens a lot of possibilities to both tourists and residents. People will then have the opportunity to cycle to Hardy’s Cottage at Thorncombe Woods, or to Maiden Castle.

“Wareham have a similar service which is well-used and well-appreciated.”

The mayor added that he thought a good location for the bays would be the train stations in Dorchester, to further improve transport options for tourists.

Cllr Chisholm has been an advocate for alternative modes of transport, championing the Streets Alive festival last year where cars were not permitted at the car park at Acland Road.

A spokesperson for Dorset Council said: “While Dorset Council is considering the potential introduction of an e-bike scheme in the Dorchester area, it is too early to say where the bikes and bays might be based.

"As soon as plans have been confirmed, we will make an announcement. Please note that we are unable to consider new e-scooter schemes at this time.”
