A school is running a sponsored event throughout this week to raise funds for a new cycling area.

Children and staff at Broadmayne First School are taking part in “Tour de Broadmayne” where each person will take turns on a spin bike over the course of the week.

The school is inviting family, friends, local businesses, and members of the community to sponsor them to help raise funds to purchase a bicycle roundabout for the playground.

The event is part of the school’s initiative to promote eco-friendly modes of transport, encouraging children to cycle or scoot for their school commute.

With this new equipment, teachers hope it will not only encourage children to be healthy but also help teach them key life skills such as teamwork.

A spokesperson from Broadmayne First School said: “Considering growing rates of obesity and poor mental health in children, this has prompted us to push for the children to exercise whenever they can

“We consider this method of play development to have so many positive tools for learning how to communicate effectively and work with others (especially for our younger children as we see a marked decline in social skills for group interaction as a result of the pandemic).”

The current target is £5,000 and so far the school have raised £1,315 thanks to community donations and sponsorship from the Dorchester Lions charity.
