The date tickets will be released for a free event commemorating the 80th anniversary of D-Day has been announced.

As reported, Nothe Fort is teaming up with Weymouth Town Council to bring a series of free activities available to anyone attending Nothe Fort on Thursday, June 6, as long as a ticket is booked in advance.

The event at the fort will include an exhibition highlighting the experiences of Weymouth residents and the role the fort played during D-Day and the Second World War.

Weymouth and Portland played a crucial role on D-Day as they were among the main points for troops to embark, including the US First Division, the 'Big Red One'.

There were also several hospitals in Weymouth to receive casualties who were evacuated from Normandy.

A spokesperson for Weymouth Town Council said: "The countdown is on. Tickets for the public event commemorating D-Day 80 go on general release this Friday, April 26 from 8am.

"The special commemorative events will mark the 80th anniversary of D-Day on Thursday, June 6 with bands, an immersive soundscape, an exhibition charting this historic moment, and so much more.

"This unique experience at The Nothe Fort is free for all attendees who secure tickets which can only be obtained through The Nothe Fort’s official booking site, so we'll share details on Friday morning."
