An emergency service has offered advice on keeping safe when marking the 80th anniversary of D-Day with beacons.

Beacons across the country will be lit up at 9.15pm on Thursday, June 6, to commemorate the moment during the Second World War when Allied forces mounted the largest amphibious invasion the world has ever witnessed.

On June 6 1944, Operation Overlord saw more than 5,000 ships and landing craft set down more than 130,000 troops on five Normandy beaches in an action that would bring about the liberation of north-west Europe from Nazi occupation.

If you are planning on holding a beacon event, you must inform Dorset & Wiltshire Fire and Rescue Service ahead of time by completing an online form.

Event coordinators planning a public or private event to mark the anniversary of D-Day MUST:

  • Inform the fire service if you are planning on having a beacon/bonfire, fireworks or an event that will attract a large crowd.
  • Inform other emergency services well in advance about the type of event you are planning.
  • Make sure to undertake any risk assessments required and ensure everyone involved is happy and familiar with your plans. Consider the access and egress of fire engines.
  • In the event of dry weather, high winds, and a heightened wildfire risk on the day of the event, please carefully consider scaling back initial plans where appropriate.
  • Choose a safe location for your beacon, away from buildings, trees and flammable objects.
  • Have a water supply nearby and keep a bucket of water or a fire extinguisher to hand. It’s better to be prepared than risk a dangerous situation.
  • Never leave a fire unattended; always ensure that someone responsible monitors the fire.
  • Keep children and pets safe, make sure they are supervised and establish a clear boundary to prevent them from getting too close.

A spokesperson for the brigade said: “Remember, prioritising fire safety ensures that everyone can enjoy the D-Day event without unnecessary risks. Let’s make safety our top priority as we come together to honour history.”
