Volunteer crew from Weymouth Lifeboat helped rescue a man after he believed he broke his arm trying to fix his engine.

The volunteer crew launched into action at 2am on Saturday, June 8 to a 60ft racing yacht two miles off Portland.

The skipper of the yacht believed he broke his arm trying to fix a broken down engine and called the coastguard on 999.

The crew continued to sail to the harbour entrance where the man was assessed, and the yacht was towed into harbour. The man then made his own way to Dorset County Hospital in Dorchester.

A spokesperson for Weymouth Lifeboat said: "At approximately 2am Saturday morning the all-weather lifeboat crew launched to a 60ft racing yacht 2 miles off Portland, following a 999 call to the coastguard from the skipper who believed he had broken his arm as he tried to fix a broken down engine.

“Thankfully the yacht’s crew managed to continue under sail to the harbour entrance, where the casualty was assessed, and the yacht then towed into harbour. The casualty subsequently made their own way to Dorchester hospital."
