A RARE portrait of Dorset poet William Barnes's wife went under the hammer in Dorchester.
Duke's Auctioneers believe the oil painting is the second only known painting of Julia Barnes.
The formal oil canvas is thought to have been completed in 1830.
It was discovered in a collection of a local family and it is thought to have been purchased in the 1950s.
The other image of the poet's wife is currently displayed in the Dorset County Museum.
The painting was sold for £400 during a paintings and furniture auction yesterday.
Also in the sale a large painting by Jean Baptiste Monnoyer of a summer basket went for £18,000.
