A ROW between two groups of men, some possibly armed, broke out in a cave on a Dorset cliff-top, police said.

Police said the incident, during which verbal threats were made, occurred at Winspit, Worth Matravers near Swanage, last Saturday, September 27.

Officers said no-one was injured but believe that two of the men could have been carrying weapons.

DS Ed Meanwell said: "Two groups, a mixture of Polish and English people, were camping in the caves and at some time before midnight two English men from one group threatened Polish members of the other group.

"The full story is not yet clear but I understand that the two men may have been carrying weapons of some description and I'm appealing for witnesses to come forward and tell me what they saw that evening.

"I understand that there were also a number of anglers fishing from the ledges near the caves and the anglers, as well as some of the campers, may have travelled from adjacent counties to enjoy the evening.

"I believe that the two men may well be local, or may know the area very well, and they may possibly have a military background."

Police say the men they are looking for are white, in their twenties, with one being of a heavier build than the other.

DS Meanwell added: "We've had no reports of anyone being injured but I'm keen to identify the two men so that I can speak with them and I'd urge the two to come forward.

"I'm also keen to hear from members of either group and from anglers who we haven't spoken with yet so that I can build a better picture of what exactly happened.

"I suspect that some local residents may also have information about the incident or about those involved and it's important that these people speak with me as well."

Anyone with information about the altercation, which happened late last Saturday (27) night, should contact Dorset Police on 01305 222222.
