Whatever your opinion of the new road it cannot be denied that the dramatic change to Littlemoor has been very fast, parts of the area have already been altered beyond recognition.

This rapidly continuing change to our environment has prompted someone to suggest that a history of Littlemoor should be written so that future generations can better understand how this suburb of Weymouth developed into the pleasant place it is now.

Not an easy task for anyone as for the most part this area has been very much a rural backwater and so very little has been written about it.

Nevertheless there are some interesting facts that arise if you delve deep enough and some unsung heroes of our community who have played a vital role in establishing what we have now.

Much has been written about Weymouth itself, numerous books line the shelves at the library on the subject but Littlemoor in it’s own right deserves to be set down in history too - even if it only covers a short period in time.

‘Off The Cuff’, Littlemoors own writing group have decided to take up the challenge and begin work on the book.

A lot of the historical facts can be found in county archives but the biggest and most important part, the people, cannot.

So the band of enthusiastic and talented writers have asked me to make an appeal to anyone out there who have memories of Littlemoor over the past fifty years or so.

If you’ve lived here for a long time, or know someone who has, and have tales of what it was like in the beginning when there were just a few rows of houses, or as the estate grew, then please get in touch. Also if you happen to have any old photographs lying around gathering dust that would show what the Bincombe Valley looked like in times gone by then the writing group would love to see them.

Anecdotes, pictures, fond memories or even not so fond ones will all go to make this book an interesting one for future residents to read and put Littlemoor on the map.

If you have anything that may be of interest then please get in touch with me in the first instance and I’ll pass it on.

Alternatively, if you would like to help with this project or even join the writing group then contact me or just drop into Littlemoor library on the 1st Monday or 3rd Wednesday of the month where you’ll receive a warm welcome. Membership is free.

  • A reminder, now that the Easter holidays are over, that the ‘Drop In’ group has begun again. Do go along for a chat, coffee and biscuits and bring with you suggestions of what you’d like to do.
