Park district

NOREEN Bailey would like to thank everybody for their generous help and support since the cowardly attack on her.

The Park district residents collected £25 at a Forum/Pact meeting, which they gave to Noreen, along with some flowers.

John and Karen Pearce, of Brownlow Street, who run Alf’s Fish and chip shop at Lynch Lane, gave £30 and a basket of fruit and George Afedakis of Ta Dya Adelphia Greek Restaurant, in St Thomas Street, invited Noreen and her husband for lunch.

On the day Noreen’s husband was not well but she enjoyed an excellent meal.

She said it was the first time she had been out for a meal in ages and felt so happy that people could be so kind.

The icing on the cake would be the news that the coward who carried out the attack has given himself up or somebody has shopped him to the police.

UNFORTUNATELY the Park district has come in for some bad press lately with letters and headlines about the man with a knife on the scaffolding, a brawl in Crescent Street and an armed arrest in Walpole Street.

As I have said in the Echo these incidents is not invective of the area.

The man on the scaffold was from Northampton and had been mentally upset for a few days. The brawl was a fight between two men from out of the area, which became heated inside the club and spilled out onto the street.

I have spoken to the police and they assure me that no armed police were used in the arrest in Walpole Street, they were just parked in the street.

So really the Park district is a great place to live as so many residents have been telling me.

From Brian and Janna who do the flowers in Chelmsford Street and the railway station because they like flowers and making the place a whole lot better. They use to live in Guernsey and choose to live her.

Many other people make a great effort to brighten up the area, including hanging baskets at the community centre, unfortunately we are unable to put them up on the lamp posts as the new lighting company will not let us.

I KNOW I am getting old, but in the good old days we all knew our neighbours and helped out when anyone was in trouble.

Is it too much to ask that we try and recreate that neighbourly spirit?

Get to know your neighbours, join in the activities at the community centre – the quizzes, jumble sales, short mat bowls, art classes, and card making classes.

For those of you who are able, the street dancing classes on Wednesday’s at 5.30pm.

Why not come and try, you never know you might just enjoy it.

For more details please telephone 839579 and leave a message, we will phone back.

Therefore I ask all residents who have a problem to come along to the next Forum/Pact meeting on September 28 at the Park Community Centre.

We will have Kate Hindson from Weymouth and Portland Borough Council to answer questions about homes of multiple occupancy and a police officer to discuss the problems when we ring the 222222 to report any non 999 calls.

It should be a lively meeting, so come along early to get a front row seat.
