NEW road signs in Weymouth have been vandalised by yobs just 10 days after they were put up.

As part of a road sign replacement scheme by Weymouth and Portland Borough Council various signs in Westham have been replaced with the new ones that included a new logo for the area.

The new signs on Corporation Road and Sydney Street were ripped apart by vandals 10 days after they were erected, leaving the road without a road sign.

Westham North councillor Christine James said: “It’s just really frustrating when everyone has worked so hard to get the improvements to the area and then someone goes and does something like this.

“I would like to say to parents that if it’s one of their children who are doing this then they should say something or if not just be aware of what they are up to.

“It also has implications for the emergency services and residents using the signs daily.

“I’m just baffled about why anyone would want to do something like this.

“Somebody, somewhere, must know something – someone must know who it was.”

Senior traffic engineer Richard Penny at Weymouth and Portland Borough Council confirmed the signs had been vandalised.

He said the road signs were being replaced a few at a time to include the new Westham logo. The Westham logo was designed in 2007 by an eight-year-old schoolgirl Mia Haden – the image was used to raise the profile of the area and for the Westham Community Orientated Problem Solving (COPS) community group.
