YOUNGSTERS have been learning to look after the animals at Kingston Maurward College.

The junior ‘Dr Dolittles’, aged nine to 13 years, have been caring for such creatures as mini pot-bellied pigs, Shetland ponies, and geckos at the college near Dorchester.

They are members of Kingston Maurward’s junior keepers club, which meets weekday mornings. College education officer Catherine Cservenka said: “We’re teaching them to respect animals.

“The girls like the Shetland ponies while the boys go for the snakes.

“The guinea pigs are also a big hit.

“They have been feeding them, cleaning and mucking them out.

The children have also been weighing rabbits and learning to care for cows, sheep and donkeys.

“We’re very lucky to have such a wide variety here at our Farm and Animal Park.”

The aim of the holiday club is to give children the chance to meet and learn how to look after a range of different creatures.

It is the fourth consecutive year the popular club has been held at the college.
