JUBILANT Nina Rezaei moved into the limelight when she was crowned Weymouth Carnival Queen 2009.

Fashion fan Nina, who dreams of working behind the scenes making the stars look glamorous, found herself in the spotlight as she was announced the winner at the Rendezvous nightclub last night.

Nina, who is 20, and lives at Upwey, said she was ‘very surprised’ to have won and paid tribute to her fellow contestants Sarah Rowe and Abbie English, who will be her attendants.

The carnival queen contest was organised by fundraising group Ladies Alive in association with Banus nightclub and the Dorset Echo.

Nina, who wins a host of prizes, is looking forward to her big day next Wednesday when she will attend events, meet dignitaries and lead the grand parade.

She said: “It’s amazing. I was lost for words when they read my name out.

“I really didn’t think I would win. Sarah and Abbie are both so lovely and I was just pleased to make it to the final three.”

Nina added: “I’ve watched the carnival every year since I was young with my family so it will be great to play a major role in it.”

Nina attended Wyke Junior and All Saints schools before going to Weymouth College. She spent a year in London doing a foundation course and is now pursuing a career in fashion with a degree in hair and make-up for film, music and photography at Southampton Solent University.

“I didn’t want to enter the competition but my friends and family persuaded me. I’m really glad I did now,” Nina said.

Young volunteers led by local artists have been busy this week making animated puppets which will take part in the procession.

Other children have an opportunity to play their part tomorrow when there will be a head-dress making workshop at the Old Town Hall opposite the Boot pub. Children aged 5-18 can pop along between 11am-3pm and those under 10 must be accompanied by an adult.
