LANDLORD Mike Carter has vowed to breathe new life into a Weymouth town centre pub Mr Carter, 60, and wife Ellie, have bought the freehold on the Globe, near the harbourside, in East Street for £200,000.
They took on the business at a time when many pubs are closing, and face their first big weekend of the year over this bank holiday.
Mr Carter, who is from Cheltenham but knew Weymouth from holiday visits, said: “The pub is so close to the harbour, the town centre and the beach I could see its potential in the right hands.”
He bought The Globe from pub giant Enterprise Inns and said he was keen to stand for the ‘small man’ and local businesses.
Hs is introducing in two real ales – Sharp’s Doom Bar from Cornwall, and Jurassic Ale, from Weymouth’s Dorset Brewing Company Limited.
He said: “Ideally, I would like to be a real ale pub.”
Mr Carter believes the East Street pub is ‘not a youngsters’ venue and is forming darts and crib teams to boost trade during the winter.
There are no plans for food apart from possibly sandwiches – the kitchen is too small.
Mr and Mrs Carter believe the key to surviving in the pub industry crisis is a friendly welcome.
“People don’t want to be welcomed with a grunt,” said Mike. “We are very friendly people.
“This is our fifth pub.
“We enjoy the pub life and thrive on it.”
