BUSINESSMAN David Gregory told of his shock after burglars broke into his home through the roof and stole valuables worth almost £5,000.

Intruders removed a panel from a conservatory to get into Mr Gregory’s home in Southview Road, Westham, Weymouth.

They stole entertainment consoles and games plus a haul of jewellery including gold items, as well as ransacking rooms and damaging family mementoes.

Mr Gregory has been shaken up by the ordeal.

Police are warning residents to secure their homes and report any suspicious behaviour.

Mr Gregory, 38, who runs a contract cleaning business, said: “I arrived home in the evening and thought it was weird that the porch door was open and all the lights were on. I initially thought that one of my employees had been in as they have keys.

“It didn’t strike me I had been burgled until I saw the front room had been ransacked. It was a shock.”

Police said thieves had broken in by removing a polycarbonate panel from the conservatory extension in the back.

Mr Gregory said: “I couldn’t believe it. I thought they would just smash a window or something.

“The police said it was a very untoward way of getting in.

“I guess you’ve got to know what you’re doing to get in that way. Strangely, they tidied up the mess they made.”

Mr Gregory said the Wii and PlayStation consoles he bought for his sons Luke and Josh had been stolen along with over 30 games.

Also taken was a gold bracelet and chain, rings, a designer watch and a BlackBerry Storm mobile phone.

Mr Gregory said: “The stuff I can replace but it’s the fact someone has broken into my home that gets me. I feel violated. Pictures of my nan and of my mum and dad’s wedding were ripped when a wallet was torn open.”

He added: “I’ve never been burgled before.

“Like everyone else I didn’t think it would happen to me. It’s strange how it affects you.

“Now I look at people in the street with suspicion and when I’m in the house there’s an eerie feeling.”

Police urge householders to lock doors and windows and consider making their homes more secure.

Witnesses and anyone with information about the burglary last Saturday in Southview Road can contact PC Stan Knight in confidence at Weymouth Police Station on 01305 222222 or Crimestoppers.
