HOW do you think Weymouth should be protected from the rising threat of flooding? That is among the questions from the Dorset Coast Forum (DCF) and the Environment Agency (EA) as part of their River Wey Project.

They are concerned about projected increases in water levels of about two feet in the River Wey and the sea from climate change over the next 60 years.

Now they are calling for people to have their say about how the town and harbourside should be safeguarded.

Tony Flux, who is Dorset Coast Forum project officer, said: “It is important for everyone in and around Weymouth to understand the issues of sea level rise and the consequences of flooding from both the river as well as the sea.

“The opinions of the local community will be most welcome as it is those that live, work or visit this area that often hold key ideas and information that can be used when forward-looking management decisions are being considered.”

The organisations claim that recent reports suggest that still water sea levels could rise by 0.6 metres – about two feet by 2075.

The overall area being considered covers the River Wey from Upwey to the harbour mouth, taking in Radipole, Radipole Lake and the inner harbour.

The rises would affect existing flood defences to protect parts of Weymouth, especially the lower sections of the town centre.

The DCF and EA want to know people’s opinions about Westham Bridge, which has sluice gates to control the flow of water between Radipole Lake and the harbour.

It has three main questions – covering the River Wey, Westham Bridge and the harbourside.

The DCF recently held a workshop for professionals involved in the day-to-day management of the coastline.

It has also involved students at Budmouth Technology College, Weymouth College and Royal Manor Arts College.

Mr Flux said that they came up with some interesting points and ideas. The deadline for comments is December 4.
