TRANSPLANT survivor Lucy Johnson from Weymouth has backed a plea for more organ donors.

Lucy has just marked the 25th anniversary of her kidney transplant but has also undergone surgery in a battle against cancer.

Mother-of-two Lucy, 47, of Wardcliffe Road, urged people to support an NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) call for more people to go on the register.

Lucy, who is mum to Dominic and Michaela, said: “It was the silver anniversary of my transplant in November.

“It is still carrying on and working well, despite all the trauma and major operations I have had recently.”

She added: “Everybody has been absolutely marvellous. People have been so kind and supportive.”

The donor who made Lucy’s transplant would have been 58 years old in November.

Lucy has held fundraisers for the Dorset Kidney Fund and the British Kidney Patient Association in the past.

She recently spent a couple of months at the Royal Bournemouth Hospital undergoing major abdominal surgery for cancer.

She was home in time for Christmas and is now preparing for the next phase of treatment, which could include radiotherapy.

The NHSBT says 10,000 people nationwide need an organ transplant, but three people die every day while waiting for an organ to become available.

It has issued a new year plea for people to sign up to the NHS Organ Donor Register (ODR).

Lucy said: “I would urge everyone to sign up to the register and carry a card. I wouldn’t be able to do what I can without it.”

Lucy, who works as a secretary at Dorset County Council, was diagnosed with end-stage chronic renal failure at the age of 11. She was told one of her kidneys was not working at all and the other was working at just two per cent of its capacity.

She spent her teenage years on dialysis before having a transplant at Guy’s Hospital in London 10 years after her diagnosis.

She hopes to return to work by April.
