A TEENAGER who was injured in a moped crash on a busy Weymouth road has praised the dozen passers-by who stopped to help.

Martyn Jones, 16, was riding home along Buxton Road, followed by his parents in their car, when he was forced to brake suddenly and his moped slipped from under him.

The Weymouth College student was doing around 23mph on Saturday when the accident happened at around 5.25pm.

He said: “The driver of the car in front slammed on his brakes, I don’t know why.

“I braked and the front wheel just slipped out from under me and I ended up face first on the floor.

“The bike landed on top of me. I tried to move my arms but they really hurt. It was really cold on the floor and I was shaking.

“Then suddenly all these people appeared and put their coats over me, even my girlfriend’s friend turned up.”

He added: “The paramedics and ambulance crew checked me over, they cut my clothes away to check my injuries.

“I’m just really achy now with grazes on my knees and elbows.”

Martyn and his parents Debbie and Martin, of Rodden Close, Weymouth, thanked all the passers-by for their help and praised the police officers, paramedics and ambulance crew who attended.

Mum Debbie, 48, said: “The kindness of all the people who stopped was unbelievable.

“I want to say thank you through the Echo because I wouldn’t recognise them if they stood in front of me, I was just shaking so much at the time.

“Because we were right behind it was like watching something on television. I was so shocked I couldn’t move.

“Our 14-year-old son Andrew got really upset because a female taxi driver drove through the accident scene, really close to Martyn’s head as he lay on the floor.”

She added: “We were told 17 people had called the emergency services to report the accident.

“The ambulance response vehicle turned up first, then the local police and ambulance. We were really impressed with them.

“It was all over within about half-an-hour.”

Dad Martin, 49, said: “The first person to stop was an ex-fireman, he kept Martyn talking and made sure he was conscious.

“Several members of the public stopped and put their coats over Martyn to keep him warm. A nurse who I recognised from working at the Verne did some basic first aid and a bus driver stopped.

“Andrew went onboard to thank him and the passengers for waiting.”

A Dorset Police spokesman said the single-vehicle collision involved a blue Sym Jet moped registered to a Weymouth man.

He said: “The call was reported by a woman on a mobile and the rider was treated in the road by paramedics although he was conscious and breathing.

“The rider suffered minor grazes and the road was closed until 6.06pm.”
