ORGANISERS are gearing up for the biggest and best Spirit of the Sea Festival so far in Weymouth and Portland.

They have expanded the event from nine days to 14 days this July and aim to attract more visitors from around the country.

The extravaganza – from July 3 to 16 – will be promoted at the London International Boat Show this week.

Roy Griffiths, from event managers Creative Solutions, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the speed at which the festival has taken off.

“The festival had a very good regional reach last year.

“We are looking for a title sponsor this year and have a few irons in the fire. We want to make a national event and market it beyond the region.”

An estimated 50,000 visitors attended events at last year’s festival.

The extravaganza was launched to tie in with efforts to secure a legacy from the Olympics for Dorset.

Organisers intend for the festival to grow in popularity and continue annually long after the 2012 Olympics.

Main attractions included a Dorset Seafood Festival, a marine exhibition and a series of concerts on the beach.

They will continue this year with the expanded Marine Ex being moved to Osprey Quay, where there is more scope to hold water-based demonstrations and activities.

Many of the 50 events in the 2008 programme will also be repeated this year, including a modelling festival and Tudor themed picnic on the Nothe.

Although people raised £10,000 last year, organisers hope to have more of a focus on charity this year.

Several groups and organisations are involved in the Spirit of the Sea organising committee.
