CHILDREN’S author Ebony Sutton opened a new chapter in the story of Broadmayne First School.

She cut a ribbon to open its new library in front of the school’s 128 pupils, staff and parents.

Ebony was joined by library volunteer Andrew Hannon to perform the honours.

Headteacher Melanie Austin said: “We were delighted to have Ebony to open the library.

“The children have been involved in the planning and choosing of the furniture, carpets and the story books. “They have been very excited about the new library.

“It’s a real asset to the school.”

The library was built on an old concrete yard and opened on World Book Day.

All of the pupils filed past the shelves for a closer look after the official opening.

They included George Pritchard, six, Ben Foyle, seven, Zach Obey, six, William Pond, six, and Harvey Weston, seven.

Ben said: “I like all of the books.”

Zach added: “The Dr Who book is the best.”

Harvey said: “I like all of the colours.”

Councillor and governor Alan Thacker also attended the opening.

Ebony, who lives at Preston in Weymouth, read her children’s book Whiskey Bravo Gets His Wings to classes after the opening – complementing the school’s motto of Flying High.

She said: “I was very honoured to be asked to open the library.

“The library is really very nice.”

Ebony also donated copies of her book to the library.

Parent Mr Hannon, whose children Dominic, eight, and Sarah, five, go to the school, helps in the library.

He said: “The library is brilliant.

“It’s a dedicated space, which is really good.”

Teaching assistant and librarian Rosemary Hargrave added: “We have been able to replace some old stock with new books.
